Wealth and business transition guidance for owners in construction, manufacturing, aerospace & defense.

Business and personal wealth are often deeply connected for founders and families behind privately held construction, manufacturing, and aerospace & defense companies. As the company grows, so do the decisions: how to protect what you’ve built, reduce risk, prepare for taxes, create options for an eventual transition, and make sure your success benefits the people and causes that matter most to you.
The Willis Group is structured around those decisions. We work with business owners and their families to coordinate the business, personal wealth and family decisions that arise while growing a company, preparing for transition and navigating life after liquidity.
Our mission is straightforward: help you build wealth, manage risk, create options for your business, and turn your success into lasting impact.

Growing your business
Build value while protecting what you’re creating

Considering a transition
Build value. Understand your options. Get your business, personal finances and family ready.

The exit & life after
Turn business wealth into family wealth.
John’s approach to advising business owners is rooted in something he learned long before entering financial services: service to others.
Growing up in a military and defense-contracting family, John saw firsthand the importance of discipline, process, teamwork, and commitment to a mission. After graduating from San Diego State University, his career took him to Silicon Valley during one of the most dynamic periods in the technology industry. Working for an internet advertising technology company, he experienced startup culture, an initial public offering, a roll-up acquisition, and the dramatic transition from the technology boom to the recession that followed.
Living through that cycle shaped the way John thinks about wealth and reinforced lessons that remain central to his work today: plan thoughtfully, diversify intelligently, and surround yourself with the right team when the decisions matter most. Those experiences also sparked a passion for helping business owners make thoughtful decisions not only about their companies, but also about the wealth, people, and families connected to them.
For over two decades, John has built a practice around listening to business owners and helping them make more informed decisions about the wealth they are creating, both inside and outside their companies. His work brings together areas that are often considered separately, including business strategy, personal financial planning, investments, retirement plans, and access to capital, while helping owners prepare for an eventual transition and what comes next.
To help address that complexity, John has pursued specialized training, earning the Certified Private Wealth Advisor®, Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist™, and Certified Exit Planning Advisor designations. As a Senior Portfolio Advisor, he also works with clients on capital allocation, portfolio construction, and diversification. Drawing on his background and experience, John has developed a particular focus on serving owners of defense, manufacturing, and service-based businesses.
For John, however, success is about more than accumulating wealth. It is about helping business owners consider what everything they have worked to build can ultimately mean for their families, employees, communities, and the causes that matter most to them. Ultimately, it is about bridging success to significance.
Away from work, John and his wife, Amy, stay busy raising their two teenagers, Jack and Lizzie, and navigating the adventure of athletics and the journey from high school to college. John also enjoys deepening his faith, finding his next interesting read, swinging a tennis racket or golf club, and appreciating a good glass of Pinot. Noir, of course.
