Upon graduation from the University of Denver in 1971 with a B.S.B.A. in Business Administration Neil continued his education at the University of Missouri – Columbia and in December 1972 received an M.B.A. – Finance. A career in financial services was begun as a management trainee at First National Bank of Kansas City in January 1973. After eight years of experience in lending and cash management for wealthy individuals and large, multi-national corporations a transition was made to Piper Jaffray and Hopwood, a regional, full-service securities firm. After three years as a Financial Advisor the additional duties of Branch Office Manager were assumed through 1996. In 1997 Neil and his team joined the Kansas City office of Smith Barney where further expertise was developed in assisting high net worth individual clients and families with services including comprehensive financial management and portfolio management. Clients also included a number of private foundations. In April 2009 The Douthat Group joined the Kansas City office of UBS Financial Services. Neil currently holds the designation of Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA(R)) awarded by the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA(R)). The CPWA(R) designation is the only advanced credential designed specifically for wealth advisors working with High Net Worth clients. Currently, less than 1% of all financial advisors within the United States carry this designation. Neil also holds the titles of Senior Vice President – Investments and Senior Portfolio Manager – Portfolio Management Group.
Neil served his industry as Vice Chairman, N.A.S.D. District #4 Business Conduct Committee and has participated in a number of different intra-company panels relating to his expertise in investments as well as to feature his community involvement.
Throughout Neil's business career he has taken an active role in serving his community. He has served in multiple board positions over 14 years for the Truman Medical Center, Kansas City's "safety net" hospital, as well as a member of the Finance Committee of TMC and as Past Chairman of Truman Medical Center Charitable Foundation. For many years Neil has served as an Advisory Director for Harvester's – The Community Network and has served in varying capacities of assorted other community organizations, including The Greater Kansas City YMCA and The YMCA Foundation of Mid-America. Neil proudly continues in the role of mentor to a 21-year old young man who was introduced to Neil at the age of 6 through a mentoring program of The Greater Kansas City YMCA. Neil is actively involved at The Village Presbyterian Church and serves as a Stephen Minister.
Neil is married to Fran and together they have four children and four grandchildren.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri Fran is a life-long resident of the metropolitan area. While attending Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., a combination of instruction in Philosophy and exposure to politics piqued an interest in the social and civic workings of our society. This lead to Fran's attendance at the University of Kansas School of Law. Upon graduation from Law School, Fran achieved admittance to both the Kansas and Missouri Bar Associations. After two years working within the legal field drafting documents in areas including Family Law, Estate Planning and the Uniform Commercial Code, Fran was introduced to the Investment world. The skills and knowledge acquired in the legal field dovetailed nicely with the planning needs of high net worth individuals and families. In 1994 Fran joined the regional investment services firm of Piper Jaffray as a partner to Neil Douthat, Branch Office Manager. After three years with Piper Jaffray, Fran and her team joined the Kansas City office of Smith Barney in 1997. While at Smith Barney, the Douthat Team focused on comprehensive financial analysis and management, portfolio management and corporate retirement planning. Clients also included a number of private foundations. In April 2009, the Douthat Group joined the Kansas City office of UBS Financial Services. Fran currently holds the title of Vice President – Investments and Senior Wealth Strategy Associate.
Fran has long had an interest in family well-being and the needs of children. While serving in several officer positions over 10 years on the Board of the Bridge Home for Children, Fran and her family also mentored several young men. In addition, she assisted the Bridge Home in opening a second facility to serve the needs of children in our metropolitan area. Currently, Fran sits on the boards of the Bishop Miege Foundation and The Catholic Charities Foundation of Northeast Kansas. Fran is also actively involved in the parish activities of St. Ann Catholic School and Church.
Fran is married to Neil and together they have four children and four grandchildren.
Gage comes to UBS with more than a decade of diverse investment experience. Gage focuses on building trusted relationships and discovering personalized wealth management solutions that recognize each client’s unique needs. Valued for his integrity, openness and ability adapt to each client's evolving goals and financial situation, Gage is a problem-solver who helps bring confidence no matter how challenging and unpredictable the markets may seem.
Prior to joining UBS, he served as a portfolio manager on a multi-billion dollar mutual fund at Waddell & Reed/Ivy Investments, a prominent Kansas City area mutual fund company. Prior to Waddell & Reed, he resided in New York City working for Citigroup's investment banking division as part of the US telecom services team where he and his team actively advised many of the world's largest mutual funds, hedge funds, endowments, and pensions. Prior to Citigroup, Gage's career began in Denver working as an associate for Citigroup's Institutional Equities division.
Gage earned his MBA from Rockhurst University, and an undergraduate degree in Finance from Colorado State University. He also has earned several industry designations, including the CFA® charter holder (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation, and the CPWA® certification (Certified Private Wealth Advisor). Gage is married to Leah, a mental health professional. The couple have three daughters, Penelope, Josephine, and Florence. In his spare time, he enjoys being with his family, travelling, entertaining, cooking, and is an avid golfer.
Kelsey's career in financial markets began over 5 years ago. Prior to joining UBS, she served as a Client Associate on a multi-advisor wealth management team at another large investment firm in the Kansas City area. Kelsey earned her BS in Health Communication with a minor in Marketing from Missouri State University. Organization, administration, responsiveness and problem solving top a very long list of skills that she brings to the team. Kelsey is married to Stuart, a sales director with a technology firm serving healthcare providers. The couple have two young sons, Harrison and Grayson.
