On June 17, 1974, a newly minted graduate of Texas Tech University (BS in Economics and Mathematics) showed up on the doorsteps of Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. hoping to make a difference in the world! Training at Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. was fascinating and opened the doors to the real world of business, accounting, spread sheets, income statements, etc. Being a cub financial reporter, that naïve young woman went boldly forth, learning that what was more important than numbers and facts in evaluating a business was the people running the business. After fifteen years at Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. with stints in reporting, management and sells, it was time to take that business background and join my husband in the financial advisory industry in 1989.

Financial advising is about the relationship. There must be trust and respect between the client and the advisor. Each client is unique and comes from a different background and set of circumstances. One size does not fit all. Each client has objectives, goals, values and risk parameters that are unique to that client. The job of an advisor is to structure an investment program that allows the client and their family to achieve those goals with a risk level appropriate for them.

In a twitter world of lightening speed information and misinformation, communication with clients is crucial. It is imperative to inform, revise, and move forward in view of the changing investment environment as well as the changing personal environment of the client. It is necessary to meet with clients and review the portfolios on an ongoing basis.

Armed with a BBA in Finance from Texas Tech University, I began my career in the advisory industry in 1981 at Merrill Lynch when the Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading well under 1000. Over this period of time, we have experienced explosive, volatile markets ranging from "Irrational Exuberance" to severe pullbacks.

Experience has taught me that short term emotions and nervous energy can be great destroyers of wealth. Therefore, our primary focus with every client is to structure a long term investment plan tailored to their specific financial goals. To this purpose, we hold periodic meetings with our clients to keep them informed about changes in the economic environment and to learn of any changes in their goals or priorities.

John Carolyn is a First Vice President—Wealth Management with UBS Financial Services. John joined UBS during the "Tech-Bubble" in February of 2002. It was during that time that John learned the importance of risk management and wealth preservation when managing assets for high net worth clients.

Asset allocation and diversification have proven to both increase returns and lower portfolio risk. However, in 2008 John recognized that those two strategies alone were not sufficient to mitigate prolonged market downturns as virtually every asset class suffered losses. In light of the financial crisis and its effect on the financial markets John co-developed a quantitative risk-management strategy using low-cost exchange traded funds. Back-tested data shows that this rules-based strategy had investors out of the equity markets for the majority the tech-bubble, 2008's financial crisis and the energy sector in 2014.

He is a native Texan and lives in the Meyerland area with his wife Natalie, his son John Dennis and his daughter Libby Grace.
