While going to college, Matt worked full time waiting tables at a pizza place. It didn’t take long for Matt to realize two important things: One, he didn’t want to wait tables for the rest of his life and two, he had a shoebox full of money totaling $17,000. At nineteen, Matt was introduced to a financial advisor, with whom he invested the savings and learned to follow the markets. That interest led to an unpaid internship at Merrill Lynch, and upon graduating with honors and a finance degree from the University of Maryland, the internship developed into a full time position.
The early years at Merrill Lynch were easy. It was 1997, and Matt was hired by a team with over a thousand clients. The market was booming and no matter what you bought, it went up! Then, March of 2000 hit, and the "dot com" bubble burst. Clients were suddenly calling in, concerned by the lack of an investment strategy or a financial plan. Matt quickly realized that providing very few services for so many people was not the business model he envisioned and he left the team with fourteen clients. Matt began to build a holistic wealth management process with the goal of becoming the CFO for a small number of families.
Twenty years later in July of 2016, Matt and his team left Merrill Lynch to enhance their wealth management offering and joined UBS. The M & C Group made this move because of their belief that UBS shares their same principle foundation of delivering a personalized client experience for people we like, trust, and respect.
The M & C Group's business is based on the same core beliefs Matt and his wife try to teach their kids: Be great at what you do, tell the truth, be accountable for your actions, work hard, and have fun.
Mike has spent his entire life adhering to a work ethic that made him one of the top junior golfers in the country, helped him earn a scholarship to play golf at Duke University, and eventually on the PGA Tour alongside Tiger Woods. When a battle with Melanoma ended his 10 year career playing professional golf, Mike employed that same work ethic to help him become a successful financial advisor. Today at UBS, Mike and his team provide comprehensive financial planning, investment management, and critical retirement income planning for entrepreneurs, executives, athletes and celebrities, and their families.
Leading with a goals-based financial planning process, Mike and his team assist clients in developing a road map that can provide clarity and confidence when making important financial decisions such as buying a second home, making philanthropic gifts, or starting a new business. Additionally, financial markets can get messy, and a well-designed plan can often alleviate the anxiety that comes with that market volatility. Most of Mike's clients have already created wealth for them and their families, and a sound financial plan can play a key role in keeping investment goals aligned with the "Family Benchmark."
Mike believes strongly in his team's investment philosophy, and his own portfolio reflects the same principles and strategies that he recommends to his clients. That philosophy rests on several principles, including transparency, cost efficiency, and most of all, an adherence to a financial plan.
Mike volunteers for several local charities and community projects, but he's most proud of Golf Pros Beating Cancer, a 501(c)3 charitable foundation he created in 2005. Through leveraging his relationships with his friends on the PGA Tour, Mike has raised north of $1.2 million for Melanoma clinical research at the Duke Cancer Institute.
Mike is a graduate of Duke University, and currently resides in Mclean, VA. He enjoys spending his free time with his wife Nicole and three children, Mason, Morgan, and Michael.
