Eleanor of Aquitaine* was one of the most influential figures in western Europe during the 12th century. She was duchess of Aquitaine and subsequently queen of France and England. As one of the wealthiest and most powerful women of the time, she was an important patron of poets and writers.
Eleanor was an innovator and is said to be responsible for the introduction of built-in fireplaces, first used when she renovated the palace of her first husband Louis in Paris.
